4C'S OF DIAMONDS

What are the 4 C's of Diamonds?

While all diamonds are beautiful in their own way, there are four traits that contribute to a diamond's appearance. The four C's'cut, carat, colour, and clarity all assist in defining what a particular diamond has to offer. Before starting the search for the ideal center stone for your engagement ring, it's important to understand the traits that make a diamond valuable.

Carat

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. Those who seek a visually larger diamond should know that the carat can be somewhat misleading. Two diamonds of the same weight can vary in size depending on the cut. A more compact shape will look smaller than one with a long slender shape, but can still weigh the same. Another thing to consider is that while a higher carat may cost more, weight does not equate to quality, which is why it is important to keep in mind the other factors.

Cut

Cut refers to a diamond's shape, such as princess, oval, and emerald to name a few, as well as its symmetry, facet placement, and technical proportions. Each diamond cut is evaluated by the GIA on how well the diamond adheres to geometric standards and is given a cut grade from excellent to poor. When cut to perfect proportions, a diamond will reflect the most light from every angle to create maximum sparkle and brilliance.

Colour

When inspecting the colour of a diamond, one is actually looking for the absence of pigment within the stone. A diamond as close to colourless as possible is much more pristine. Yellow and brown tones that are easily apparent in a diamond lower its cost and rarity. The GIA includes a grading scale between D to Z to measure the colour in white diamonds. A D-graded diamond is completely clear, while Z equates to an extremely yellow diamond.

Clarity

While usually not visible to the naked eye, clarity points to both internal and external flaws of a diamond. A naturally occurring internal characteristic of many diamonds is called inclusions. Depending on the nature, location, size, and amount of inclusions, a diamond's grade and cost can decrease. The GIA grading scale for clarity determines the number of inclusions and their visibility to the naked eye. Flawless diamonds are rated FL, while extremely included diamonds are rated I3.
